These records confirm he was a mariner. Thomas Head was charged with assault in 1736L "William Ryall of Seaton, mariner, Robert Lowman of Seaton, mariner and Thomas Head of the same, mariner. William Ryall is bound to appear at the next Quarter Sessions to answer charges of assault and battery on Peter Bampfield of Bere." 29 May 1736. (QS/4/1736/Midsummer/RE/8) Thomas Head was charged with assault in 1746: "Thomas Head of Seaton and Beer, mariner, Richard Marshell of the same yeoman and Caleb Clarke of the same mariner. Thomas Head is bound to appear at the next Quarter Sessions to answer charges of assaulting and beating Anne Ratehill of the same widow and to be of better behaviour. Marked with the seals of all three subjects". 4 April 1746. (QS/4/1746/Easter/RE/9) Thomas Head was again charged with assault in 1749: "Richard Head of Seaton and Beer, mariner, is bound to appear at the next Session, accused of assaulting and beating John Bastone of Sidmouth, labourer. Sureties: Philip Head of Seaton, mariner, and William Weshlade of Salcombe Regis, yeoman". 4 July 1749. (QS/4/1749/Midsummer/RE/10) "Presentment against Thomas Head of Seaton, mariner; Anne his wife; Ann Head of Seaton, spinster, daughter of said Thomas; Elizabeth Kiddell of Seaton, spinster; and Hannah Dare of Seaton, singlewoman, accused of assaulting and beating James Clarke at Seaton. [No bill status given]". Midsummer 1749. (QS/4/1749/Midsummer/PR/3) This second presentment is interesting in that it states Thomas had a daughter Ann - who does not appear in the baptism records for Seaton - and who, given she is described as a spinster, is probably born 1731 at the latest. Which suggests Thomas and Anne were married and having children before moving to Seaton. Thomas Head seems to have been victom of an assault in 1749: "Presentment against John Horsford of Seaton and Beer, sailor, for assaulting and beating Thomas Head at Seaton. True bill". Easter 1749. (QS/4/1749/Easter/PR/16) Thomas Head seems to have been victim of an assault in 1754: "William Salter of Seaton and Beer, mariner, is bound to appear at the next Session, accused of beating Thomas Head of Seaton and Beer. Surety: Isaac Chapel (Chappel) of Seaton and Beer, mariner". 4 March 1754. (QS/4/1754/Easter/RE/48) Similar recognisances exist for various other individuals linked to this same assault: Francis Bartlett of Seaton and Beer, mariner; Joseph Bartlett of Seaton and Beer, mariner; John Dare of Seaton and Beer, mariner; Richard Whicker of Seaton and Beer, mariner. All were found not guilty: "Memorandum of verdict of not guilty in respect of Joseph Bartlett, Francis Bartlett, John Dare, William Salter, and Richard Whicker, all of Beer and Seaton, mariners, accused of assaulting and beating Thomas Head at Seaton and Beer, summarising the legal steps since the presentment in Epiphany Session" (QS/4/1754/Midsummer/NO/2). On the 6th October 1783, Richard and his wife applied for a mortgage/lease for Claylands, a property on the Ashleigh Estate in Barnstaple for a 2000 year term, costing £90.
