man Arnulf of Metz, Saint‏ 2) 3) 4)

Notes: Identify Arnulf's ancestry is extremely challenging given the surviving sources. He very likely was connected to the Merovingian dynasty, but any genealogy suggesting the nature of that connection is unsourced.

Later sources (11th century at the earliest) identify Arnulf's wife as Doda but there is no contemporaneous evidence to support this claim.

Saint Arnulf of Metz (c. 582 - 640) was a Frankish bishop of Metz and advisor to the Merovingian court of Austrasia, who retired to the Abbey of Remiremont. In French he is also known as Arnoul or Arnoulf. In English he is known as Arnold. He is claimed to be a direct descendant of Flavius Afranius Syagrius, being a rare case for descent from antiquity.

The Genealogy of the counts of Boulogne (and various other 11th century sources), identify Arnulf as a son of Arnold, son of Ansbert, by Blihildis (sister of Dagobert, and consequently Merovingian ancestry). Settipanni convincely explains why this ancestry is not true. A significantly earlier source, the Vita Gundulfi, identifies Bodegisil as a brother of Gundulf, and a father of Arnulf - which is significantly likelier, and therefore what has been followed here.

From Acta Sanctorum, July, IV, p. 160:
"Sanctus Gondulphus filius deplorati Munderici, quem Theodoricus rex necari jussit, fuit magnus in Austria sed major & nobilior coram Domino, cujus mandata servavit.
