Family
Joan de Helyon 1) Daughter of Walter de Helyon and Agnes Welsh. Notes: Joan is identified as an heiress of Helyons (in Magna Marcle) by most secondary sources. Most of these same sources identify her father as either Walter or John. There is an IPM, for a Walter de Helyon in 1342, which identifies his co-heiresses as: "Rose (Roesia) the wife of John de Raleye, of full age, John, son of Maud Helyon sister of the said Rose, aged 18 years, and Eva, another sister, of full age, are his next heirs." The IPM does not make clear the nature of their relationship but presumably they are either siblings or cousins of Walter. His holdings to not include Hellens Manor. Close Rolls for Henry VI also identify a John de Helyon without male heirs... "Order in presence of the next friends of Philippa and Isabel daughters and heirs of John Helyon esquire, or of their attorneys, to assign dower to John Grene of Gosfeld co. Essex 'gentilman ' and Edith who was wife of John Helyon : as for a fine paid in the hanaper the king has pardoned the trespass of John Grene in taking her to wife, and her trespass in marrying him without licence of the king." But from IPMs these individuals can be discounted: " the said Philippa afterwards died without heir of her body issuing, after whose death the said moiety remained to Roger Wentworth, knight, and Anne his wife, daughter and heir of Isabel, the other of the daughters and heirs of John Helyon the son." http://www.british-history.ac.uk/inquis-post-mortem/series2-vol2/pp1-45 A Walter de Helyon appears in records for 1354 and 1357 so presumably Joan's father . "Collections Towards the History and Antiquities of the County of Hereford" suggests a 1348 deed evidences that: "Walter de Helyon, son of Hugh de Helyon, conveys lands in Marcle, including the Overwood Plantation, which he held under Sir James d'Audley to William Isenard, Vicar of Marcle, in trust, to pay the rents and profits after the death of the grantor to his only child, Johanna". Married/ Related to: Richard Walweyn, Knight 1) 2) Notes: Richard Walweyn served as MP for Herefordshire. Numerous records exist for early Walweyn family members - the family had been established in Herefordshire and the Welsh border area since at least the 12th century. Trying, however, to determine Richard's ancestry is exceptionally problematic, as secondary sources are contradictory (similar to for most Walweyn family members). Therefore no attempt has been made here. Possible near relatives include the following: John Walweyn Younger of Yarkhill, Weston and Radlow, Herefordshire (C 241/95/42) fl. 1326, who became a knight before February 1327 (DL 25/1754). John of Yarkhill's seal survives: "shield of arms (a bend ermine), within a traceried outline of three angles and three lobes, Size: 22 mm, Shape: round, Colour: brown-red, Legend: *SIGILLVM§IOHANNIS§WALEWAYN, Personal. Seal Note: § stands for a five-petalled flower" (DL 25/1453/1159) IPM for Agnes, late the wife of Adam Walweyn: John Walewayn, son of Thomas Walewayn, aged 14 1/2 years, and married a year before the death of the said Agnes, is her heir. John's proof of age gives him the following dob: "John, firstborn son of Thomas Walewayn, was born 1 May, 1329". Children: 1. Thomas Walweyn 3) 1) 4)Died between 19 and 20 May 1415 1) 4)
Election: Elected 4 times as MP for Herefordshire between Jan 1396/97 and Oct 1404 1) Will signed: Mar 1414/15 4) Notes: Thomas was a member of the Herefordshire gentry. His primary residence was Much Marcle inherited from his mother. He added additional properties in Ruardean and St Briavels following his marriage to Isabel, a Hatheway co-heiress. Identified as father of William who marries Joan Whitney primarily on basis of PCC wills. |
