woman Joane Skeere‏‎ 1) 2)
Born ‎± 1579 Doddington, Kent, England‎ 3) 4)
Baptised ‎1 Nov 1579 Doddington, Kent, England 3) 4)
Died ‎31 Jan 1635 Boughton Malherbe, Kent, England‎, approximately 56 years 2)

Notes: Three years after Robert died Joanne married Richard Dine, a yeoman of Boughton Malherbe and had three more children. She was buried in the churchyard there; a tombstone on the right hand side of the pathway to the south porch marking the spot . Upon the stone the following words can be discerned: 'Here lieth the body of Joanne Skeere the wife of Robert Filmer of Wichling, decesed and after the wife of Richard Dine and left issue of Filmer (Jeff)erie and John and by (Dine) Elizabet h Joane Helena and died the ...day of January anno 1635.' The stone is very worn and hardly readable. It is curious that both in her case and that of Annys their maiden names should be given.

Joane and her two sisters received 40s. each from her father's estate in 1601. Her five brothers 20s. each. Joane was the eldest girl aged 18 years.

The following information was found by Mr Duncan Harrington. In the case of Bridget Cusman (Couchman) alias Symonson versus Arthur Cushman, concerning the beating up of Bridget by her husband "with a great cudgill..that she was all over blac k and blewe.." and the threatened murder of her. There is a sworn statement by Joane Skeere. She was the family servant to Thomas Symonson for a year or more and before a servant to Arthur Cushman for 9 months or thereabouts. Born at Doddington she was aged 23 years, the deposition is dated 16 October, Joan signed by mark. Thomas Symonson of Maidstone was the father of Bridget. Thomas Cushman of Leeds, Mylman, lived there four years, born at Loose, now aged 40 or more (July 30, 1611) Father of Arthur.

Joan Skeere is said to be 18 years old in December 1601. She was the eldest of three sisters, the others being Alice 15 and Mary 11. Of the brothers William, Geoffrey, John, Richard and Ralph only Ralph is given as age 4. Geoffrey and Richard seem to be living at Kingsdown at this time.

Notes: John and Martha, being the parents of Jeffery Filmer, is supposedly confirmed by the court rolls for the manor of Kingsnorth, in Boughton Malherbe. The records supposedly shows Jeffery Filmer inheriting land from his father, John, who had acquired the land in Boughton Malherbe by 1640 at the latest. Jeffery Filmer also inherits lands from his uncle, Jeffery Filmer. The court roll has not, however, been reviewed to confirm this.
