man Rhodri ap Merfyn of Gwynedd, King of Gwynedd‏‎ 1)
Born ‎± 820
Died ‎878‎, approximately 58 years

Notes: Rhodri ap Merfyn (c. 820-878), later known as Rhodri the Great (Welsh: Rhodri Mawr), succeeded his father, Merfyn Frych, as King of Gwynedd in 844. Rhodri annexed Powys c. 856 and Seisyllwg c. 871. He is called "King of the Britons" by the Annals of Ulster. In some later histories, he is referred to as "King of Wales", although the title is anachronistic and his realm did not include southern Wales.

to:

woman Unknown‏‎ 1)

Notes: Based on a 14th century manuscript, Rhodri's wife is often identified as Angharad ferch Meurig. She is very likely to be an invention as explained by Stewart Baldwin. Hence she, and her genealogy, have not been included here.

Children:

1.
man Anarawd ap Rhodri of Gwynedd, King of Gwynedd‏ 1)
Died ‎± 916

Notes: Anarawd ap Rhodri (died c. 916) was a King of Gwynedd and referenced as "King of the Britons" in the Annales Cambriae.
2.
man Cadell ap Rhodri of Dinefwr, King of Seisyllwg‏ 1)
Born ‎± 850
Died ‎909‎, approximately 59 years

Notes: Cadell was the second son of Rhodri the Great of Gwynedd and Angharad, a princess from Seisyllwg. In 872 Angharad's brother Gwgon, King of Seisyllwg, drowned without leaving an heir. Rhodri became steward over the kingdom, and while he was unable to make a legal claim to the throne, he was able to install Cadell as king.
