John's career in public service lasted over thirty years including service as Sheriff for at least 11 annual terms. John was involved in a series of cases related to his mother's inheritance. His cousin Ralph Bassett died with one son, Richard, however, John and the other joint-heir argued that a 1339 entail made them the rightful heirs. Ultimately the inheritance would be shared, John settling for the key manors of Drayton Beauchamp, Bassets and Wilstone. |
