George White 1) 2) 3) 4) Born ± 1699 5) Died ± Oct 1744 Hankerton, Wiltshire, England, approximately 45 years 1) 3) Buried 25 Oct 1744 Hankerton, Wiltshire, England 3) Occupation: 23 Jun 1726; Yeoman 5) Residence: between 23 Jun 1726 and 1744/45 Hankerton, Wiltshire, England 6) 1) Will signed: 28 Feb 1744/45 1) Notes: John Week's will, dated 1749, confirms George and Elizabeth were the parents of George White: "Firstly I give and bequeath unto my kinsman George White, son of George White, late of Hankerton in the said County of Wilts gentleman Deceased by Elizabeth his late wife also Deceased". George was a freehold land owner in Hankerton in 1736. George also owned land in Long Newnton, or would have come into ownership of such land had he died later - as this is settled on Mary Wayt as part of his son George's marriage settlement. This seems to have gone via George's oldest son John, to George the second son, from John Weakes. John Wake was involved in litigation with the Estcourt family in 1725 with respect to Newnton - which John Wake seems to have purchased. http://aalt.law.uh.edu/AALT7/C78/C78no1362/IMG_0030.htm . There is an earlier court case, dated 1670 involving the same parties, which may relate to the acqusition of the manor, but this has not yet been reviewed. --- Hankerton parish registers are missing for 1679-1699 hence no baptism has been identified for Georrge. Possible evidence with respect to George's ancestry: Giles White of Hankerton mentions "my son George White". Will proved 1699 so almost certainly too early to be this George. A daughter of Giles, Joan White, has her will proved in 1697. He is described as "Of Crudwell and Hankerton" in deeds (D2079/III/205). He is described as "Of Eastcott, Crudwell and Chaddeslowe" on a fine in parish records If we assume that his father was of similar standing, then we would expect to see him on the 1705 voters list for Hankerton. Two freeholders are identified on that list with the surname White - John and Giles. Giles White had married Ann Archard Alias Hayes in 1698. Therefore he was presumably not George's father - otherwise George's marriage would have been within the prohibited degrees of kinship. Giles is described as "of Crudwell" however on his marriage record. John Weakes's will was dated 2 April 1749. It also confirms other relatives. See Catharine Unknown for transcript of John's bequests. According to "Reports of cases argued and determined in the High court of chancery, during the time of Lord Chancellor Thurlow, and of the several lords commissioners of the great seal, and Lord Chancellor Loughborough, from 1778 to 1794", George came into possession of Newnton and had land at Shrievenham, Berkshire which he had purchased from his wife.. Long Newnton House continued to be lived in by George's oldest son Thomas White, who seems to have expanded the property. https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101227609-long-newnton-house-long-newnton 3.
