Henry West 1) Died 1631 2) Occupation: Husbandman 2) Residence: Tetbury, Gloucestershire, England 2) Will signed: 1631 Gloucester, Gloucestershire, England 2) Notes: Henry West's existence and the three descendants following are learnt from an unusual and fanciful comment in the Tetbury parish records which does, however, corroborate the Wests being ancestors of part of the Overbury line. Henry's will is dated 1631. If he lived to 152, as the parish register suggests, he would have been born in 1479. From a chronological perspective, that seems very unlikely. Not least, his son John, would have been born when he was around 90! "Henry West of Upton lived to the age of one hundred and fifty two years he marryed five wives by the four first of whom he had no child but the fifth brought him ten children and it appears from a paper now in the possession of Abraham the husband of Mary Terrel one of his descendants that each child had ten children born to it before the death of the father ye following is a list of ye above mentioned Henry West and his descendants brought fown in a direct line to 1759 in one of its branches. Henry West who lived to one hundred and fifty two years John West his son Richard West his grandson Simon West his great grandson John West his great grandsons son Simon West his great grandsons grandson Mary Terrel his great grandsons great grand daughter Abraham Terrel Mary Terrel oldest son Richard Terrill NB Ye Overbury, ye Wests, the Hobb's, ye Hills, Ye Drews, Lloyds, Baldings and many other families now in being at Tetbury are descended from the above mentioned Henry West". This story also appears in the "History of Tetbury" with further details: "An Account Of A Very Old Man. Gentlemen,-Be pleased to understand this following discourse, I received from the information of a very honest and creditable man as may live by breath ; and although it may seem very misterious and increditable to many, yet having, notwithstanding, heard it so largely and oftentimes made out, insomuch that I dare be bold to atest it, for almost an infallible truth. There was, in the days of King James the First, a man that lived in a small hamlet called Upton, in the parish of Tetbury, his name was Henry West, his occupation and employment what it might be I know not, but in process of time, it came to pass that this man had the number of five wives. Now, by the four first he had no child at all ; but by his last wife, it pleased Almighty God to give him the increase of ten children. Furthermore be it known, that the great Creator of all men, gave him such a large space of time to live here on earth, that he saw every one of these ten children, to have ten children each of them ; and afterwards, having lived to the age of 152 years, the Lord was to put a period to his time, being old and full of days. Now, I supose that the like example was not in any time past, nor now to be equalised or found in any part of the realm of England, or in any part of Europe." Married/ Related to: N.N. Child: |
