There is a photograph of James Webber and his men, taken, possibly a little later, outside their premises which have since been demolished.

Notes: The “Dunster Castle stable Account Book” now in the Somerset Record Office, Taunton, for the period 1867-69 shows that “J. Ball” and “Jane Ball” together with “James Stanbury” were all engaged on shoeing work for the castle stables during these years. It would seem a full set was charged £1-0-0 at the time (approximately £32 in 1994”.

Originally John Ball's blacksmiths was located where the brick faced house now stands at the bottom of St George's street near “Parkham Corner”. That home was erected after 1840 at which time it seems the smith shop was moved inside the yard behind the archway between two houses in St George's Street. The far wall adjacent to the churchyard was, at one time, incorporated into the Smith's Shop and today it remains smoke blackened from former times.

Notes: William John, lived with his mother (Jane Ball) and step-father (George Quick) in Bradninch for the initial years of his life. Bradninch is a small town situated on the river Culm. As early as 1790 there were said to be five paper mills within two miles of Bradninch. Many found employment in these mills as is evident from census returns. By 1881, the family had, however, moved to Creech St Michael, near Taunton. They were probably living in the Creech paper mill houses alongside the works. The 1881 census states that George Quick was employed as a blacksmith (mill), Jane was present, and William John, then 15 years old, a “step-son”, was a “paper machine boy”. By this date Jane had had three more children, Sarah Ann aged nine, John aged 7, and Alice Rose aged 1 year. Both Sarah Ann and John had been born at Bradninch, but the youngest, Alice, was born at Creech. William's older sister Elizabeth was not present and she was not at Dunster with the Woolcotts either. No doubt she had started work some years before.
How long the Quick family stayed at Creech St Michael is not known but by June 1886 “George Quick smith” appears in a Cardiff Directory then living at Pen-y-Peel Road, Canton. At the time of the 1891c ensus George and Jane Quick and their family, but excluding William John, were living at 334 Cowbridge Road, Canton. George had evidently set himself up as a “Master and Employer”. His son John was at the time apprentice to him.

William John was not living at this address because on 2nd April 1890 at the church of St John the Evangelist, Clifton, Bristol, then aged 23, a paper maker of Canton, he had married Lucy Ann Downing, a spinster, aged 21 of Grover Place, Redland, Bristol. Her father was John Downing, a farmer. Lucy Ann was employed at Grove Place, Bristol, looking after the children of the rector who probably also performed the marriage service. Her father and mother and nearly all her family had emigrated to Pennsylvania between 1883 and 1888 but an uncle William Downing and an Aunt Elizabeth Harding, youngest sister of John Downing, were both living in Roath, Cardiff; the former at 12 Cepper Kincraig Street and the latter at 52 Richards Terrace. It seems likely William John and Lucy Ann met in these surroundings as Roath is not far from Canton.

In 1893 William Ball paper maker is recorded in a Cardiff Directory living at 22 Egerton Street, Canton, and later in 1897 at 17 Nottingham Street, also Canton. William would have been employed at The Ely Paper Mill to the west of Canton which had been founded in 1865. By 189- it was the largest producer of newsprint in the United Kingdom. Today it is owned by Wiggens Tempe and is the production centre for their carbonless paper operations.

The children of William and Lucy Ann were, with the exception of one daughter, all born at Canton. These were Florence Daisy 1891, John William 1893, Herbert Frederick 1894, Wilfred C. 1900 and Kathleen Rosina 1903. Lilian Ann was born after the family moved to Sittingbourne after 1903.

In Sittingbourne they lived firstly at 95 Park Road, later moving to 3 London Road, a house named Woodsell and finally to the house next door named “Wilgate”. Woodsell today is the offices of Andrew Cory and Co., solicitors.

Around 1926 as a result of a change of ownership of The Sittingbourne Paper Mills where William was then employed as Chief Paper Maker, he was required to retire early. He died two years later on 18th January 1928. Lucy Ann died on 18th December 1964 at the Kent and Sussex Hospital then aged ninety-five. She is buried with William John in Sittingbourne Cemetery.
