Notes: There is no marriage for a Richard Hutchings and Elizabeth in either Kilkhampton or surrounding area.

Richard Hutchings is named on a counterpart lease dated 1669, between Thomas Philipps and Emmanuel Hutchings of Morwenstow, husbandman. The lease is for the lives of Richard and Emmanuel. This would suggest That Emmanuel is either Richard's father (likely) or brother (significantly less likely). The land involved is "1/10th part of all messuages in Hartiscott alias Harscott in Morwenstow now in the tenure of Hugh Trick" - which, after Richard's decease, would be leased by his widow for her life and her daughters' lives. (Z16/2/8/47)

Thomas Philipps seems seems to have inherited it, ultimately, from John Philipps of Stratton, who had purchased it from Walter Orchard in 1625. Albeit, before that time, the Philipps were leasing that same land. Though the 1625 deed suggests these "premises were sometime the inheritance of John Manning, gent., deceased".

This is further supported by a counterpart lease dated 1741, which references "Tenth part of messuages, lands, tenements and commons in Harscot alias Harscott formerly in the possession of Emmanuel Hutchings, now or late of Sarah Hutchings", for "99 years or the lives of (2), Jane and Grace Hutchings, daughters of Bethnell Hutchings". (Z16/2/8/98) The repeated presence of Emmanuel as a name is unusual, and it evidences this land remaining in the same family for multiple generations.

The above would therefore suggest this Richard, is the Richard, son of Emmanuel and Joan, baptised at Morwenstow in 1650.
