George Barnden was friends with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of Sherlock Holmes. Extracts from Arthur Doyle's letters demonstrate this. (Arthur Conan Doyle: A Life in Letters)

"Barnden & I have been thinking of making an insuring raid on Edinburgh. I should like a run up awfully. It would put new life into me. If we could be sure of one £1000 case we would be right for our Xs. I wonder if you could work it in any way. I have half a mind to Mrs Ryan & Drummond. I shall not however until I hear from you."
Page 193 - from a letter to Mary Doyle of Southsea (March 1883)

"I go to a ball tomorrow night - that is if this infernal neuralgia will allow me. It is rather a commen subscription affair - however Barnden wished me to go & I suppose an unmarried man may go anywhere"
Page 195 - from a letter to Mary Doyle of Southsea (1882-1884)

"What a lucky thing that I have chummed with the Gresham men. Garrington a Doctor here sent up a furious epistle last week to London saying that he had examined for 20 years & his father before him and he would be glad to know how he had forfeited the confidence &C &C since a young stranger had been allowed &c &C. A scratch of a pen would have taken £60 off my income - but knowing me they sent down Newson the head man for the South - whom I took to my house and made very drunk and played billiards with - on which he pronounced Garrington to be a skunk and all is going to end well. Barnden stuck to me like a man".

"No word for good or evil from the Gresham yet. Barnden seems hopeful."
