HMS Excellent was a training ship for gunnery practice.

From Paul Benyon's Navy Database:

"17 Apr 1847 Gunnery Practice in the British Navy. It is now well known to every person connected with the navy, that our seamen excel all other nations in gunnery practice as much as they have hitherto excelled them in seamanship. The perfection that has been thus attained is owing to the system pursued on board H. M. S. Excellent. at Portsmouth, where both officers and seamen are daily instructed in the practice as well as the theory of naval gunnery. When these seamen and officers are sufficiently skilled in this art, they are drafted on board the newly-commissioned ships as gunnery officers and seamen gunners, where they become the instructors of their shipmates ; and hence the crew of a British man-of-war can fire a broadside or a single gun with greater precision than any foreigner. The accuracy in firing on board the Excellent has been so frequently and satisfactorily tested, that no one who has ever witnessed it can be otherwise than surprised and gratified at its remarkable precision. The utility of this establishment has been so perfectly established that the Lords of the Admiralty are holding out inducements to both seamen and officers to join it in order that the navy may be supplied with experienced gunners skilled in the theoretical as well as the practical knowledge of naval gunnery. - London Paper. Dated 1846."

Notes: Richard remarried on the 5th August 1876 to Elizabeth Jane Hewett. They had one son; James Richard Yealland (1878-1900).

He was described by his 1845 Mariner's Register Ticket #289,527 as Richard Yealland alias William Yealand (sic) age 20 years & 8 months, 5'5", fresh complexion, grey eyes and dark hair. Same sheet also says 5" 6.25" and dark complexion.

He was on HMS Druid from 1839 to 1843 during the war with China and the founding of Hong Kong. He also visited the East Indies during this period and was stationed in West Africa whilst aboard HMS Amphitrite and HMS Dart between the 1st September 1847 and the 30th Novermber 1849. During parts of the 1850's he was then stationed in South America & West Indies. Whilst serving aboard HMS Amphtrite and HMS Dart his activities were related to to the supression of the slave trade. Records show that Richard was on his way to join the HMS Penelope (but doesn't appear to have reached the vessel) prior to a treaty abolishing the export of slaves which was signed on the Penelope, the 1 January 1852.

On the 20th November 1851 Robert Jenner, Commander of HMS Centaur wrote a glowing recommendation letter in Montevideo to Richard Yealland. The letter details his full naval service starting in May 1838 and lists over 10 ships which were stationed in numerous locations including; Devonport, the West Coast of Africa, Brazil, the Baltic the West Indies, the Mediterranean, Sunderland and Malta.

His son Richard's birth certificate mentions that Richard lived at Devonshire Place, Southsea in 1858.

His will was made on the 29th June 1898; 15 months before his death on the 22nd September 1899.
