Family

man Maurice Denys‏‎ 1) 2)
Born ‎between 1400 and 1408‎ 3) 4)
Died ‎1466‎

Notes: of Siston, Gloucestershire.

Married/ Related
to:

woman Joan Stradling‏‎ 2)

Notes: Joan Stradling can be identified as Walter's mother from a 1530 Dennis pedigree (College of Arms). This is relatively contemporary given Walter died in 1505. This is supported weakly by subsequent visitations that state Walter's mother were one Katherine Stradling - though those pedigrees date from 1623 onwards.

There is no clear evidence on the maternity (or paternity) of Joan Stradling. The 1623 Gloucestershire visitation states her father was Sir Edward Stradling but no contemporary records evidence that and this Denis pedigree has sigificant errors at much more recent generations ["Katherine d. of Sr Edward Stradling"]. She is not mentioned in Sir Edward's self-written family history. However, given the links between the Stradling and Dennys families, it seems likely that Joan is either a daughter or nephew of Sir Edward.

Sir Edward was given wardship of Maurice Dennys (Joan's husband) so it seem reasonable for him to have married Maurice to a daughter of his (or a close relative). Sir Edward was married to Jane Beaufort, bastard daughter of Henry Beaufort, and descendant of Edward III. Given the lack of evidence for Joan being a daughter of that marriage, it seems likelier she was either a bastard, a daughter of a different marriage or a daughter of a relative.

man Walter Denys, Knight‏ 5) 2)
Died ‎1 Sep 1505 Olveston, Gloucestershire, England 1) 5)

Notes: Held the Manor of Awste, and also the Manor of Siston at one time. The Manor of Siston was "given to Giles Bruges and Alexander Baynam, knights, Christopher Baynam and Robert Russell circa 1501.

The four armorials on his funerary brass provide insights into his relatives:
1) Denys
2) Russell - Margaret Russell (Walter's grandmother) was co-heiress to her father
3) Quartered: Denys, Russell, Gorges, family of Eleanor Ferre daughter of Sir John Ferre of Tothill - The Russells were heirs to the Gorges family, however the inheritance was entailed to younger sons.
4) Quartered: Denys, Russell, Gorges, Danvers - Agnes Danvers (wife of Walter) was co-heiress to her father
