Notes: John came into a substantial inheritance from his grandfather Philip de Aylesbury. John's career in public service lasted over thirty years including service as Sheriff for at least 11 annual terms.

John was involved in a series of cases related to his mother's inheritance. His cousin Ralph Bassett died with one son, Richard, however, John and the other joint-heir argued that a 1339 entail made them the rightful heirs. Ultimately the inheritance would be shared, John settling for the key manors of Drayton Beauchamp, Bassets and Wilstone.
