These cottages belonged to the Allendale Drift mine, where William and his sons and grandsons all worked. William Ward may not, however, have been John's father. Per his birth certificate, John Edward, born in 1865, was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth Hunter! His father is not recorded. It seems William treated him as a son, and recorded him as such in all records, following his marriage (nb. no marriage certificate so far found) to Elizabeth Hunter.
